I made this directory of craft, arts and jewellery-making supplies outlets in York because I thought a first hand account would be more useful than a Yellow Pages style directory, where often the person who created the site is creating hundreds at a time and has never visited any of the shops themself.

I try to keep this up to date - as you can probably see, it's a work in progress but I will fill in details about more of the shops as I have the time.

I visit all of the craft shops featured here on a regular basis - as a jewellery maker and crafter myself, I find them an excellent resource for materials for creating my own range of unusual jewellery. They've been particularly helpful for bespoke jewellery pieces, when I might have needed a bit of chain for a bracelet, some necklace fastenings or earring hooks in a different finish to the ones I regularly use. I do buy some jewellery making supplies in bulk over the internet, but also try to support local craft shops when I can - if we don't use them, they won't be there when we need them...
