Craft Shops in York

A small directory of some of my favourite York craft shops...

The Viking Loom
A little maze of rooms full of beads, threads, fabrics, cardmaking and scrapbooking materials. More info...

Duttons for Buttons
Duttons, as you might imagine, primarily stock buttons - but the shop has a growing selection of other craft products as well. More info...

Gillie's Fabrics
Primarily a fabric shop, this sewing outlet also stocks sewing machines, trimmings and embellishments. More info...

The Drawing Shop
A little shop at the edge of the Shambles, crammed with paints, pastels, paper, plus modelling clays and miscellaneous crafting supplies. More info...

The Bead Hive
Opening soon on Goodramgate, a shop entirely dedicated to beading. The beads are laid out in trays and jars so it looks a bit like the beaders' equivalent of a sweet shop. Their website says the new premises will have a beading area so you make a start on putting your purchases to use straightaway! More info...

Jewellery tip of the day: rather than traditional gold or silver rings, why not consider tungsten carbide wedding bands - they are more durable, scratch resistant and virtually indestructible!

Craft Basics
A comprehensive range of craft materials stuffed into quite a small shop just outside York City walls, this shop has beads, jewellery making supplies, paper, modelling clays and more. More info...

Boyes' Haberdashery Department
The upstairs section of this Yorkshire discount store chain has a surprisingly large range of budget craft materials and fabrics. More info...

Barnitts' Craft Department
Barnitts is York's largest hardware store, selling pretty much everything you can think of for the home and garden - and this includes a small selection of craft materials. They're located betweeen the power tool and key-cutting areas. More info...
